I think its because the perimeter increases (on the left the matching of the pairs uses the same sides matched up) on the right the supposed hypoteneuse of the pairing say the purple and the green combined triangle is not truly one straight line? its a optical illusion

The angles don't add up, but you'd have to lay it out on a computer to see it (or do the trig). In the second configuration, there's a diamond shaped gap in the center that covers, you guessed it, 1 sq. in.
