Terrain types and movement/action costs
Movement in Bughunter is an AP-based, grid system (see Action Points).
Load (weight penalties)
The game adds up all weight penalties for armor and equipment you carry. The total, rounded down, is added to the AP cost of each square you enter.
Wound penalties
Moving while having less than 2/3 or your maximum HP costs 0.5 extra AP per square. Having less than 1/3 costs 1 extra AP per square.
Example:Private Ryan is wearing an Armored Spacesuit (penalty 1) and carries a Battle Rifle (0.4), two magazines (0.1 each) and a First Aid Kit (0.1). His total weight penalty is 1.7, rounded down to 1. He also has lost 12 of his 30 HP to a bug attack, giving him a wound pen. of 0.5. Ryan pays an additional 1.5 AP for entering a square.
Very Sticky Goo
Certain aliens can leave Very Sticky Goo on the floor, causing characters moving through the square to pay extra AP to move through it if they fail an agility roll. The only way to remove Very Sticky Goo is to walk in it, wherein there is a chance that the goo is used up.
Basically, movement costs 1 AP per square, plus your current Load factor (the penalty for carrying heavy stuff or armor).
Automatic Movement
The dropdown field with the arrows (next to the "Min chance" field) is for setting a direction for offline movement. It means that every 30 minutes, during the game updates, your character will try to move one square in the direction you have set. AP costs are normal, i.e. automovement is not free like OpFire.
Pathfinding is rudimentary. If the path is blocked by anything, the character will try to move in a random direction 90° to what you have set. In other words, if you set automove to east, your character will walk east until he hits a wall, then move north or south at random, until he finds a way to proceed east again.
Currently it is coupled only with the OpFire logoff button, i.e. if you log off using one of the other buttons, it will not be activated. You can see which of your characters is using offline movement in the character list, in the "Move" column. Automove is cancelled when you log on next.
Automove does *not* let you move to another map.
Panic Movement
The other, involuntary instance where automove is used is panic movement (humans only, monsters don't panic). If a human panics, he will set a movement direction away from the threat that causes him to panic, and then run one square per update in that direction, until he recovers from panic.
The Map
If you're looking for an explanation of all these shiny buttons, why not try the Interface page?
Click this icon to display map labels. Some labels are visible only for certain teams, e.g. on a spaceship, the crew might know where to find the armory or the nav computer.
Each map has 256 squares. Click this icon to display coordinates. They come in useful when telling others where to go, or where you placed a boobytrap.
This one displays your character's Line of Sight (LOS), or more correctly, his current field of view.
| Open: | 1 AP | No cover | ||
| Airlock: | 1 AP | No cover | Can be pressurized or unpressurized. Monsters can't operate airlocks! | |
| Obstructed: | 2 AP | Cover 25% | You can see into this square but not through it. Characters can hide here. | |
| Dense: | 3 AP | Cover 50% | You can not see into or out of it. Characters can hide here. | |
| Explosive: | 2 AP | Cover 25% | Like Obstructed, but could blow up when you shoot into it (currently, it doesn't). Characters can hide here. | |
| Impassable: | N/A | Solid rock. | ||
| Stand Up: | 4 AP | Currently, you can only be knocked down, not go prone voluntarily. | ||
| Stacking: | +1 AP /char. | Moving into a square with other characters in it costs +1 AP per character. The current stacking limit in BH is 3 characters per square. Dead and unconscious characters don't count against stacking. You cannot enter a square that has reached its stacking limit. | ||
| Carrying a body: | +2 AP | You will drop the body automatically when being knocked down. | ||
| Barricades | + lots of AP | - | This square has been barricaded. Move your mouse over the icon to see how strong the barricade is. | |
| Stairs/Ladders | 3 AP | 3 AP | Light stairs lead up, dark stairs lead down. Arrows indicate a ladder, going up or down. In these squares, you can climb over an obstacle or move to another map. |
- Doors (red lines): no extra AP. Doors in the game just block the Line of Sight (LOS). Some doors can be operated by switches. Note that bugs can not operate technical equipment, but that doors can be forced open.
- Windows (blue lines): impassable, but you can shoot through them. Actually, windows in the game are more of a force field. Yes, we know it's strange.
- Vacuum: The outdoors areas on the moonbase are filled with lots of vacuum. If your character is a human, he or she might consider wearing protective clothing, like a spacesuit. Without it, you can move in vacuum, but you won't get very far. And spacesuits can easily be damaged in combat, so keep a pack of Leakstop(tm) paste at hand. Still, a damaged spacesuit is better than nothing. Bugs, on the other hand, can't wear spacesuits, but some of them have the Anaerobic skill and can move in vacuum without being harmed.
Decoration
Most of these have no game function.
Other things in the square
The red dot indicates that something lies here. Move your mouse over it to see what it is.
There is slimy green goo on this square, slowing down movement.
Your character has recently seen someone or something move into that square. Hover your mouse over the icon to see more info.
Characters
These are civilians. There are lots of different icons for civilians.
A prone character.
Your character is always highlighted in yellow.
Marines without armor, with light and heavy armor.
A Marine with a heavy weapon.
This Marine is a medic in OpHeal status, meaning he will try to heal you if you enter his square.
An Orbital Assault Trooper (OAT).
Deng troopers.
A Microbug and an adult monster.
This human has been spun into a cocoon by some horrible creature. That keeps him fresh and makes it easier to transport him.

Automatic defense systems can ruin your day.
There are rumours about mysterious alien creatures, but none of these stories has been confirmed yet.
